Preserving the Past: Masonic Temple is Given New Life in Downtown Kalamazoo
This Hilton dual branded property in Kalamazoo, MI features both new construction and adaptive reuse and was Green Globe certified in May 2021. The 6-story, 114 room Hilton Garden Inn is located in the historic Rose Street Market building, which was originally constructed in 1915 as a Masonic temple and was later used for shops and offices. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Maintaining the original architectural integrity was key so the public spaces incorporate the three stacked ceremonial auditoriums. Premium guestrooms feature large round windows original to the building, providing a “portal” view of the cityscape. Research into the building’s history informed the color palette and overall interior design. Actual instruments from Heritage Guitars and scenes from the iconic local factory (formerly Gibson Guitar Factory) feature prominently in the art throughout.
